How to Choose a Floor Lamp for Reading
A good reading lamp puts light on the page, not in your eyes, and sits comfortably next to the chair or sofa where you actually read. Floor lamps are ideal for this: they leave the side table free and can reach right over your shoulder. Here is what to look for, and how to set one up so you can read for hours without straining.
1. Put the light beside you, slightly behind your shoulder
Place the lamp next to your chair or the end of the sofa, a little behind where you sit, so the light falls over your shoulder onto the page. Light from in front of you shines into your eyes and reflects off glossy pages; light from directly behind casts your own shadow over the book.
- Which side: either side works for reading. If you also write or do crafts in the same spot, put the lamp on the side opposite the hand you write with, so your hand doesn't shade your work.
- Space: allow room around the base, especially for arc lamps, so the lamp isn't knocked when you sit down or get up.
2. Get the height right
When you're seated, the bottom edge of the shade should sit roughly level with your shoulder or eye, about 40 to 50 inches above the floor for most chairs and sofas. Lower than that and the shade narrows the light; higher and you start to see the bare bulb.
For a lamp that arches over the seat, check two numbers on the product page: the overall height and the reach. The Ventoro arc floor lamp, for example, stands 65 inches high and measures about 39 inches wide from base to shade, with an adjustable rod to fine-tune the height.
3. Choose a shade that sends light down
- Cone and dome shades point the light downward onto your book, which suits focused reading. The Arlo has an 18.1 inch linen cone shade on an arched frame, and Ventoro has an amber acrylic dome.
- Adjustable arms let you aim the light exactly where you need it. The Flexo is 74 inches tall with an adjustable arm and an 11 inch shade.
- Fabric drum and pleated shades spread a softer light across the room as well as onto your lap, a good choice if the lamp also lights the living room. The Aureline has a 15 inch fabric drum shade, and the Capstone a pleated linen shade on a curved beechwood arc.
- Colored glass shades, like the amber glass on the Joni, give a warm, atmospheric glow. Tinted glass filters some of the light, so use a brighter bulb if you plan to read under one.
4. Pick the right bulb
- Brightness: start with about 800 lumens (the light of an old 60W bulb) for reading. If you find yourself squinting, or for small print, go up to about 1100 lumens. Never exceed the maximum wattage listed for the lamp.
- Color temperature: 2700K to 3000K warm white is comfortable for evening reading. A 4000K neutral white looks crisper for detailed work.
- Color rendering: a bulb with CRI 90 or higher shows colors more naturally, which helps with illustrated books, maps and crafts.
- Socket: most of our floor lamps take a standard E26 bulb. Check the Specifications table to see whether a bulb is included; the Arlo comes with a matching LED bulb.
Our guide to color temperature and bulbs explains Kelvin, lumens and CRI in more detail.
5. Small details that make a difference
- Switch position: a foot switch, as on the Arlo and Ventoro, lets you turn the lamp on without reaching around the shade. Others, like the Flexo, have a switch on the cord.
- Dimming: to dim a plug-in floor lamp, use a dimmable bulb with a plug-in dimmer or a smart plug that supports dimming.
- A surface for your cup: the Aureline also comes in side table editions, with a 15 inch round table built into the lamp, so your book and tea have somewhere to go.
- Cord: run the cord along the wall or under a rug edge so nobody trips over it on the way to the chair.
