Rules of thumb used by lighting designers. Compare them with the size options above and the Specifications.
- Room size — add the room's length and width in feet; the total in inches is a good fixture width. A 12 × 14 ft room suits a fixture about 26 inches wide.
- Over a dining table — choose a width of about half to two-thirds of the table's width, and hang the bottom 30–36 inches above the table top.
- Over a kitchen island — hang pendants 30–36 inches above the counter, about 24–30 inches apart. A linear light should be about two-thirds of the island's length.
- In open floor space — leave at least 7 ft (84 inches) between the floor and the bottom of the fixture.
- Higher ceilings — for each foot above 8 ft, hang the fixture about 3 inches higher.

Why you'll love it
Soft, flattering light for the table you gather around
Linen shades diffuse each bulb into a soft, even glow, so dinners and long conversations happen in comfortable light instead of under a harsh ceiling bulb.
Choose 4, 6 or 8 lights, from 28 to 48 inches wide, to suit your table, and combine the two suspension rods to set the right drop for your ceiling height.
